Chapter 175: What About Between Guardians?

I got used to twice the gravity surprisingly quickly so I bumped it up to three times. That gave me at least a little bit of a challenge so I just kept it activated for now.

We moved through the last area of the tunnel that ended in a dead end with one final group of those rock type Anomalies crowding inside the space.

Kris leapt towards them immediately, the catboy flying through the air to appear above the group before he suddenly crashed down towards them to slice through the group at the back effortlessly.

He then rose up to strike a pose with one leg lifted up and holding his greatsword behind him in a classic action pose with his butt sticking out intentionally.

He looked so natural doing that which made me wonder if he had some secret skill that allowed him to do this so perfectly without tripping or stumbling around.

I followed up behind Kris, jumping in with my materialised arms to slam them down on top of the Anomalies.

I could not jump as far because of the triple gravity pushing me down but it also meant I slammed my arms down with more force than normal.

The tunnel shook from the impact and the shockwave blew the other Anomalies away.

I then pointed each of my palms in four different directions and shot out lightning from my palms to strike down the Anomalies that were blown away and wiping them out.

Both Kris and I took a moment to check around us to make sure there weren’t any other Anomalies around.

Seeing that there was no other Anomaly around, I relaxed and let out a sigh.

Kris hopped over to me, "Master~ We’re all done here!"

I nodded, "Seems like it. We’ll probably do another sweep through the tunnels to make sure that we did clear it and there aren’t any Anomalies hiding somewhere. But for now, I think we should take a break."

He nodded, "That’s what I was thinking too, Master! Here, here~"

The catboy tugged at my hand and brought me over to the area near the wall where he sat down and started patting the floor beside him.

I sat down beside him and he squirmed cutely in response.

"Ehehehe~ That was pretty fun, Master~ We should do this more often~"

"You mean patrolling?"

"I mean hanging out, Master~ You don’t usually hang out with us just like this~"

"Well... I mean... We all have things to do, don’t we?"

"Mmm~ But you’re the Mortal God, Master~ You can do whatever you want~"

"That’s not true. I still have my own duties as well. But you are right, I should spend more time with you guys instead of away. I guess you guys can be considered my other family now since we’re liv--"

He spun to me, "Wah!! Really, Master?! You really think so?! You see me as part of your family?!"

I wasn’t stupid. I knew that he still had some unresolved trauma related to his past family and he’s probably looking for something like that he could hook onto in order to deal with it...

Seeing him look up at me with those eyes of anticipation like that... Well, it’s not like I have to lie anyway.

I reached out and patted his head, "Yes, yes. As I was saying, we’re all living together, fighting together and working together now so I do see all of you as my other family too. A family that might not be bound in blood but are bound in our goals at the very least."

That was when I realised something...

Kris’s eyes seemed to be dilated slightly, his ears were twitching uncontrollably and his mouth hung open with a line of drool rolling down the side of his chin.

Err... What is going on?

Ah! Whoops! I just started patting his head like it was the most natural thing to do since I usually do that with my sister!

I lifted up my hand and it only took him a moment before he snapped back to his senses again.

"Ah! Ma... Master... Master? Nyaa? What did you do?"

I cleared my throat, "Sorry... I just did it out of habit because I usually do that with my sister..."

"Then do it with me too! I want more, Master! Nyaa! It shouldn’t be a problem right? I am your family now as well!"

He pushed his face even closer to mine and I had to lean back to avoid him being too close.

"Alright, alright," I assured him placatingly before reaching out to start patting his head again.

"Nyaaaa~" He purred, squirming around as I ruffled his hair and scratched at his head.

Ok, he’s actually really cute, what the heck... And his hair is also really soft, the feeling of touching it felt like I was touching an actual cat’s fur as well.

Not good, I might even get addicted to this myself...

I quickly pulled back after a while and he let out a disappointed meow. Like he actually meowed...

"Master..."

"Too much is not good, ok? That’s supposed to be a reward," I half lied.

"Nyaaa~ That means you will give me more pats if I’m deserving of it?"

"... Yes."

"Yay~~ Then I’ll be good!"

I don’t even know how I got caught up in this...

"What do you think about your fellow Guardians? I know what you think about me but I realise I never actually asked about what your relationship with the others are like."

He tapped on the side of his cheek, "Well... I guess I’m fine with all of them? There aren’t any problems between us at least but I guess it’s more because we don’t really interact much with each other outside of work after all. I will say that Sergei is a little creepy though..."

"Is it because of the mask?" I asked.

"Mmm... A little bit? But he just has that odd feeling of a killer about him too..."

Oh right... The others probably didn’t know that Sergei was a contract killer and fled here to escape his former employers to become a Guardian.

I guess to them, he’s just some edgelord trying to cosplay as some dark assassin or something... Maybe... I dunno. That’s why I’m asking him about the others right now.

Kris continued, "But if I’m being honest..."

He suddenly stopped and looked around, as though checking to see if there was anyone else around that might be eavesdropping on us.

Despite the fact that the entire place was empty, that was still not enough for him as he beckoned me to get closer to him.

I leaned down and he slipped his arm around mine to pull himself even closer to me.

"The one I actually fear the most is Avatasia..."

Ah... Ok, I get why you are cautious about saying something like that out loud... But was there really a need for you to press yourself so close to me and whisper like that in my ear?

In fact, after you said that, you’re still not letting go of my arm...

I guess I’ll just pretend not to notice and instead, address what he said.

"Ava? That’s surprising... Why her?"

"You never know what she’s thinking... It feels like she’s here but also not here at the same time and... I don’t know... It feels like she’s like this really sharp knife that can cut you when you aren’t looking..."

I mean... I’ve seen how Olivia butt heads with her so I know full well she isn’t a pushover...

Kris still held my arm with one hand while tapping his cheek thoughtfully with the other, "Mmm... I suppose they are alright? I don’t really talk too much with them either. Leena’s really serious about being a Guardian and Jia Lian likes to keep to herself and doesn’t really talk to me. I’ve seen her talking to people who I think are her family through her phone though. Ah! She only does that when she’s off duty of course!"

"Mmm... And what about Olivia?"

I saw his tail actually stand up straight for a moment before it relaxed again.

"She’s... Also scary... In another way."

Understandable.

"So... I don’t suppose there’s anyone that you particularly like?"

He looked up at me and a familiar mischievous smile appeared on his face.

"I like Master!"

I went ahead to give him a headpat which made him squirm around and start purring cutely.

Just a little bit of this and he melts into a puddle like that.

Despite everything, he’s still cute.

But talking to him here, I realised something important...

It seems like my Guardians aren’t really interacting with each other much... Should I organise group events or something?
